David Tyree, whose spectacular one-handed catch against his helmet sparked the Giants’ late game-winning drive against the previously unbeaten New England Patriots, has not practiced since training camp opened in July because he is rehabilitating a surgically repaired right knee.
Wide receiver David Tyree was placed on the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) reserve list by the New York Giants on Tuesday, meaning the player who made a game-saving catch in the Super Bowl won’t be making any for at least the first six weeks of the season.
Tyree, whose spectacular one-handed catch against his helmet sparked the Giants’ late game-winning drive against the New England Patriots, has not practiced since training camp opened in July because he is rehabilitating a surgically repaired right knee. He had surgery in May.
Once Tyree he is taken off the PUP list, he has 21 days to either be activated, or he is finished for the season.
Other notable players who will start the season on the PUP list include Tampa Bay running back Carnell (Cadillac) Williams, New England guard Stephen Neal and Cleveland wide receiver Joe Jurevicius. All are coming back from knee surgery.
Indianapolis
The Indianapolis Colts placed kick returner T.J. Rushing and tight end Zac Herold on injured reserve, ending their seasons, and cut three players to reach the NFL’s roster limit of 75. Rushing and Herold both injured their knees in Sunday night’s 20-7 loss to Buffalo.
Rushing averaged 23 yards on kickoff returns and 13.1 on punt returns last season. Herold, a free agent from Nebraska-Omaha, appeared to be in contention for a roster spot.
Etc.
• Cornerback Jack Ikegwuonu, a fourth-round pick from Wisconsin, was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list because of a knee injury.
• Michael Strahan is staying retired, although his agent said the former defensive end seriously considered returning to the Giants.
• The Bears cut cornerback Ricky Manning Jr., who made 101 tackles and five interceptions over two seasons.
• The Chiefs cut kicker Jay Feeley, one day after signing him.
