Vikings tackle Matt Kalil isn’t sure how much he will participate during the team’s mandatory minicamp next week as he continues to recover from minor offseason knee surgery.
Kalil said he was a full participant during Tuesday’s practice but was limited again on Wednesday.
“I was out there [Tuesday] maybe pushing myself a little too hard, so I had to scale back today,” Kalil said. “But I’m getting closer and expect to be ready to go soon.”
Kevin Murphy continued to receive first-team reps at left tackle in Kalil’s absence. He participated with his position group in a walkthrough session but didn’t increase his workload.
Kalil expects to be a full participant next month for training camp.
No more bacon
As delicious as it can be, the Vikings removed the greasy meat with some of the nutritional improvements this offseason. The Vikings also got rid of fried items, mayonnaise and cream-based products.
Coupled with the Olympic style training program under head strength and conditioning coach Evan Marcus, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said the team lost 170 pounds of fat and gained 70 pounds of muscle.
“It’s a collective effort,” Zimmer said. “The strength coaches and trainers brought it to my attention. So, heck, I think even Rick [Spielman] said he’s lost some weight.
“I think I’ve actually lost weight too, but I think that’s from stress. I’m eating fish every day for lunch. That’s a change for me too.”
Safety Kurt Coleman remained after practice catching balls from the jugs machine and working on footwork with cornerbacks Julian Posey and Derek Cox. It’s something he did during four seasons with the Eagles and continues in his first season with the Vikings.
“You can never put in enough work,” Coleman said.
Coleman has received first-team reps in OTAs alongside Harrison Smith at safety, but the team has rotated through the position so far. Robert Blanton received first-team reps on Wednesday. There will be plenty of competition during training camp, but Coleman said everyone will receive a fair shot to earn a starting spot.
“If you’re afraid of competition, this could break you,” Coleman said. “But what I think this will do for this team is make us the best team we can be, and we’re going to put together the best 53-man roster.”
• Offensive lineman David Yankey participated in his first OTA after catching a red-eye flight Tuesday. He finished his finals at Stanford and was allowed to resume NFL activities. Linebacker Anthony Barr and defensive end Scott Crichton will return to the team next week during mandatory minicamp.
• Linebacker Chad Greenway will host his eighth annual “Greenway’s Gridiron Gallop” 5K fun run and walk at Lake Nokomis on Sunday. The Father’s Day event will begin at 7:30 a.m. and all proceeds will benefit the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board youth athletic programming.
