Defense sticks it to the offense

Last update: August 2, 2008 - 11:24 PM

The Vikings practiced in full pads Saturday night, and the 11-on-11 drills focused heavily on the running game. In one drill the offense was backed up at its own 1-yard line. The defense stood firm and even got a safety when Kevin Williams broke through the line and wrapped up Maurice Hicks in the end zone.

Perfect night

The coaching staff has given veteran kicker Ryan Longwell a lighter workload in camp to save his leg, but he went 6-for-6 on field-goal attempts in his most extensive live action since a week ago. Longwell made field goals from 26, 27, 31, 33, 41 and 51 yards.

Peterson watch

Adrian Peterson's night ran the spectrum. He had an explosive 23-yard run up the gut early in the first team period. He got stripped by linebacker E.J. Henderson and lost the fumble in the next period. Later, Peterson and safety Madieu Williams had a big collision at the end of a 12-yard run.

PAYING OFF

Gus Frerotte, quarterback

Back for his second stint with the Vikings, the veteran has established a pretty good rhythm with wide receivers Aundrae Allison and Robert Ferguson the past few days.

INJURY REPORT

(all are day to day)

CB Marcus McCauley (knee)

TE Garrett Mills (ankle)

CAMP CHATTER

"Dang!"

-- Cornerback Charles Gordon after Frerotte threaded the ball between him and Marcus Walker to Ferguson on a pass that both defensive backs could have knocked down
