Jackson gets mixed results out of drills

Jerry Holt, Star Tribune

Tarvaris Jackson

Last update: July 30, 2008 - 7:16 AM

Tarvaris Jackson connected on three of four passes in a third-and-long drill but then struggled in a seven-on-seven period during Tuesday's morning practice.

He was especially impressive at the outset of third-and-long, hitting Bernard Berrian on a 25-yard pass down the left side and then finding Sidney Rice for 25 yards. But in seven-on-seven Jackson was intercepted twice.

Defensive stalwarts

Otis Grigsby, who has been working at left defensive end with the second team, had two would-be sacks (quarterbacks aren't tackled in training camp) and got consistent pressure at the morning workout.

Linebacker Rufus Alexander, returning from a knee injury that wiped out his rookie season, forced a fumble by fullback Naufahu Tahi with a big hit and then recovered the ball.

Taking it easy

Only one of the Vikings' nine practices have been in full pads. That was Monday morning. In a hot and humid conditions Tuesday morning, the team was in shoulder pads and shorts. The afternoon session was the first special teams-only practice of camp.

PAYING OFF

Benny Sapp, CB

So far this category has been reserved for the Vikings' big-name offseason additions. Sapp wouldn't fit that category -- he signed a one-year, $800,000 free-agent contract with the Vikings after spending his first four seasons in Kansas City -- but he's certainly trying to make a name for himself early in camp. Sapp, battling for a job in the nickel package, had two interceptions in the past two days. Tuesday morning, Sapp jumped the route in a seven-on-seven drill for one pickoff.

CAMP CHATTER

"That is the biggest thing I have to get over. I can't save every play. Once I get that down I think I will be OK."

-- Quarterback Tarvaris Jackson, on what he can learn from interceptions thrown in training-camp practices.

INJURY REPORT

DE Ray Edwards (back) On physically-unable-to-perform list

TE Garrett Mills (ankle) Day to day
