No Favre, no controversy: Just another day at camp

Last update: July 29, 2008 - 7:27 AM

GREEN BAY, WIS.

Well, that was a letdown.

The Packers opened training camp sans Brett Favre, and there wasn't a single banner raised, chant started nor Ted Thompson doll hanged in effigy by fans lining the fences outside Clarke Hinkle Field.

In fact, other than the crush of media standing inside the fence, it seemed like any other NFL training camp practice: Long and boring with half-asleep fans mustering a smattering of applause whenever a deep pass was completed.

"All you [reporters] hanging around might be a distraction, but there are no other distractions going on," Aaron Rodgers said after his first training camp practice as the team's starting quarterback. "We're pretty focused as a team right now."

Despite the appearance of a normal training camp practice, it was still kind of weird knowing Favre had agreed not to show up for "a couple of days" while Thompson, the team's general manager, tries to trade him. It's kind of like visiting Disney World and finding out Mickey Mouse got laid off.

Then again, it seems many fans are more than ready to move on with Rodgers. And that includes the kid working the counter at the local Jimmy John's.

"You from Minneapolis?" the kid asked between practices. "You can have Brett Favre. Just take him. I am so tired of what he's doing."
