The Vikings signed Mike Zimmer on Monday.

No, not that Mike Zimmer.

This Mike Zimmer is a veteran linebacker who was last with the Jacksonville Jaguars and is not related to Vikings coach Mike Zimmer, although both played college football at Illinois State.

Zimmer the linebacker spent the 2013 training camp with the Jaguars and played in four preseason games after signing with them as an undrafted free agent. He tried out for the Vikings during their rookie minicamp and was signed along with fellow linebacker Dom DeCicco.

DeCicco spent time with the Bears and Buccaneers. He made 12 special-teams tackles for the Bears in 2011 and 2012.

To make room on the roster, the Vikings waived quarterback Travis Partridge and guard Conor Boffeli, who had signed as rookie free agents after the draft.

No. 700 for Scearcy

Brainerd defeated visiting Rocori 10-3 on Monday, giving baseball coach Lowell Scearcy his 700th career victory.

Scearcy, who is in his 45th season, is the second high school baseball coach in state history to win 700 games. Former New Ulm coach Jim Senske retired in 2003 after 39 seasons with 707 victories.

St. Cloud Cathedral coach Bob Karn, who has 699 victories in 44 seasons, could also have reached the milestone Monday, but the Crusaders and Foley were rained out. Cathedral next plays Tuesday against Mora.

• The top three batters in the order — Evan Bigley, Joe Bonfe and Brandon Tripp — each collected three hits and went a collective 9-for-17 as the St. Paul Saints crushed host Sioux City 11-3, the 999th victory in franchise history.

Alec Crawford of the Gophers was named Big Ten pitcher of the week. Crawford tied a career high with eight innings pitched and allowed only one run as the Gophers beat No. 8 Indiana 2-1 in 10 innings last Thursday.

• Minnesota United FC forward Christian Ramirez was named the NASL Player of the Week for his one-goal, one-assist performance in United's 3-1 victory over the Fort Lauderdale Strikers last Saturday.
