Getting to Know: Vikings LB Brandon Watts

Posted by: Master Tesfatsion Updated: May 19, 2014 - 9:25 AM

Name: Brandon Watts

Position: LB

School: Georgia Tech

Started playing football when he was 7 years old

Recorded 179 tackles in 49 games with 7.5 sacks, 16 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles and one interception

Started 12 out of 13 games last year and matched a career-high nine tackles against Elon in the season opener

Helped his draft stock at Georgia Tech’s Pro Day by running in the 4.4s during his 40-yard dash

Played quarterback and safety at Washington County High in Sandersville, Ga. and was named Region 3AAA Defensive Player of the Year; also ran track for four years and played basketball for two years

On if he thinks he can help at linebacker immediately

Yes, sir. I feel that I could step in. I bring a lot of athleticism and instincts for getting to the ball. I can bring a lot to the team, special teams, anything they need so I can step in and contribute right away.

On what it was like waiting to be selected

It is frustrating especially when you play against some of the people and you know you are a better player than them, but you can’t let it get to you. I feel like God put me in the best situation that he wanted me in, and I am moving forward from there and work as hard as I can.

On if it’s exciting to see the Vikings selecting a lot of young defensive players in the draft

Yeah it is. It is going to be a new place for all of us. With a lot of new players on defense it will help you adjust better, and work harder because you have people just like you. Then try to get after it, and to contribute the best way you can.
