Using numbers to stack up Bridgewater with Manziel, Bortles and Carr

Posted by: Matt Vensel Updated: May 14, 2014 - 11:27 AM

Not many passers compile better numbers than the ones Teddy Bridgewater put up at Louisville.

In three years as a starter there, he completed 68.4 percent of his passes for 9,817 yards, 72 touchdowns and just 24 interceptions. He averaged 8.6 yards per attempt and had a 157.2 collegiate passer rating. Oh, and he had a 27-8 record as a starter, which is kind of important.

But the box scores don’t tell the whole story about how Bridgewater stacks up with Blake Bortles, Johnny Manziel and Derek Carr, the other quarterbacks who went in the top 40 picks.

Thankfully, Greg Peshek of Rotoworld went beyond the box score and dug a lot deeper to find out where they threw the ball, how accurate they really were and how they fared under fire.

According to Peshek, Bridgewater threw nearly 58 percent of his passes between one and 10 yards from the line of scrimmage this past season, by far the most of that group. He was last among that group on passes thrown between 11 and 20 yards, but only Manziel threw deep more frequently. The three other passers piled up a lot of yards on screen passes, but Bridgewater threw screens on just 9.84 percent of his throws in Louisville’s pro-style offense.

Hate numbers? Sorry. Here’s a graphical look at where Bridgewater and the others threw in 2013.

How accurate was Bridgewater? Nobody in this bunch was better than him on throws within 20 yards of the line of scrimmage. He was the most accurate of those four within 10 yards and only Manziel was more accurate in the 11-to-20-yard range. Bridgewater's touch on deep balls could use some work, but his 50.82 accuracy percentage wasn't too far behind Bortles and Manziel.

And when it comes to beating the blitz, Bridgewater's 76.92 percent accuracy was the best, too.
