• General Manager Chuck Fletcher said he believes the Wild could be even better next year, with most of the players signed for the 2014-2015 season. The free agents include winger Dany Heatley and defensemen Nate Prosser and Clayton Stoner. “We have the opportunity to bring most of our team back, so we’re in a pretty good position that way,” Fletcher said.

• The 1964 Gophers baseball team, which won the NCAA championship, was honored before the Gophers-Purdue game at Siebert Field on Saturday. Thirteen members of the team were present. The 1964 title was the third in eight years under legendary coach Dick Siebert. The team included future major leaguer Bill Davis and Archie Clark, who went on to play 10 years in the NBA. Joe Pollack pitched three complete-game victories during the 1964 College World Series, which has happened only one other time in College World Series history.

• Going into Sunday’s game, Twins second baseman Brian Dozier led American League second baseman in runs scored (33), walks (28), home runs (9) and is tied for first in stolen bases with 11.

• Gophers linebacker Aaron Hill was signed by the Rams as a free agent. … Former Vikings coach Mike Tice, now offensive line coach with the Falcons, certainly knew about the football reputation of the Gophers’ Ra’Shede Hageman and might have influenced Atlanta to draft the defensive lineman in the second round. … Kevin Sumlin, a Gophers football assistant from 1993-97 and now head coach at Texas A&M, had three players taken in the first round: offensive tackle Jake Matthews (sixth overall), wide receiver Mike Evans (seventh) and quarterback Johnny Manziel (22nd).

• The University of Minnesota men’s track and field team picked up a total of seven titles this weekend, including one by All-America high jumper Wally Ellenson, who set a personal record by clearing 2.21 meters (7 feet, 3 inches) at the UW-La Crosse Eagle Open on Friday. The Gophers compete at the Big Ten championships next weekend in Lafayette, Ind.
