Vikings' five impact newcomers

Last update: July 23, 2008 - 7:25 AM

Jared Allen, defensive end

The skinny: No kidding, right? The Vikings' trade for Allen -- and the historic six-year, $74 million contract they gave him -- created a buzz around the league and significantly improved an already stout defensive line. Allen led the league in sacks last season with 15 1/2 for the Chiefs. He also brought more swagger to the locker room and hasn't been bashful in expressing high expectations.

Key stat: Allen's contract is the largest in Vikings history, and his guaranteed money (just over $31 million) represents the fourth-highest figure in NFL history. That shows how much the team values Allen's services and the impact he can make.

Bernard Berrian, wide receiver

The skinny: The Vikings desperately needed to bolster their receiving corps and thus signed Berrian to a six-year, $42 million free-agent contract. Berrian becomes the team's No. 1 receiver and gives the offense a vertical threat, which should also take pressure off the running game.

Key stat: Berrian caught a career-high 71 passes for the Bears last season.

Madieu Williams, free safety

The skinny: Williams' arrival wasn't as sexy as Allen's, but the Vikings hope he will bring stability to the back end of the defense. Signed as a free agent from the Cincinnati Bengals, Williams has good coverage skills, which should give the defense some flexibility, and also is known for his work in the community.

Key stat: The Vikings ranked 32nd in the NFL in pass defense last season, and they're hoping Williams will help improve that area.

Gus Frerotte, quarterback

The skinny: Yes, Tarvaris Jackson is the guy, but the Vikings brought in a familiar face this offseason just in case. Frerotte looked comfortable adjusting to Brad Childress' version of the West Coast offense during offseason workouts.

Key stat: Frerotte has played for seven teams -- including two stints with the Vikings -- in his 15-year career.

Thomas Tapeh, fullback

The skinny: The local guy coming home is always a popular angle, but Tapeh fills an important hole with the departure of Tony Richardson. Tapeh is a big, powerful fullback who can be a valuable lead blocker for Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor.

Key stat: Tapeh has more catches (26) than carries (22) in 39 career NFL games.
