Continued: Hartman: Vikings offensive line coach deserves an interview

  • Article by: SID HARTMAN , Star Tribune
  • Last update: January 10, 2014 - 11:13 AM

Ben Lauer, a redshirt offensive tackle who started four games for the Gophers, was named to the Football Writers Association 2013 All-America freshman team.

Lauer made his starting debut against San Jose State, and in that game the Gophers rushed for 353 yards, their most since 2005. Incidentally, now that tight end Brandon Lingen has committed to Minnesota, Wayzata football coach Brad Anderson will have four players on the Gophers squad: Lauer, Lingen, linebacker Chip Wipson and wide receiver Jeff Borchardt.

Jottings

• We will find out how good the Gophers basketball team is in the next few weeks when it plays several top-rated teams, including at Michigan State this Saturday, Ohio State at home on Thursday, at Iowa on Jan. 19 and Wisconsin at home Jan. 22.

• Penn State joined the Big Ten in 1992, and including Tuesday’s victory, the Gophers have beaten the Nittany Lions 29 times in 39 games. ... Chaska’s Russ Travis and Edina’s Graham Woodward are members of this years Penn State team.

• Former Gopher Chip Armelin is playing in his first season at Southern Mississippi after transferring from the Gophers. Armelin is averaging 4.7 points and 1.8 rebounds in 14 minutes per game. … Justin Cobbs, another Gophers transfer, leads Cal with 14.4 points and six assists per game.

• ESPN released its latest NCAA tournament projections, and it has the Gophers as a No. 12 seed in a play-in game against St. Mary’s. Minnesota is also one of the last four teams projected to make the tournament.

• Curt Giles, the Edina hockey coach, recently won his 300th career game with a 5-2 victory over Cretin-Derham Hall. Edina, at 12-3-0, is ranked No. 1 in the Minnesota Class 2A hockey rankings.

• An interesting note came from the Wild, when the NHL Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs aired on New Year’s Day, Minnesota was the No. 7-ranked TV market for the game in the country.

• Clint Cosgrove was a graduate assistant for the Gophers from 2007-2010 and is now a scout with National Preps and is the director of Midwest scouting.

Sid Hartman can be heard weekdays on 830-AM at 7:40, 8:40 and 9:20 a.m. and on Sundays at 9:30 a.m.
