Linebacker gets hit with second DWI arrest in a month.
Vikings linebacker Erin Henderson was speeding and driving “all over the road” before he crashed his SUV, and was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of drunken driving for the second time in a little more than a month.
Henderson’s latest arrest came in Chanhassen on New Year’s Day near a park-and-ride commuter lot near the intersection of Hwy. 101 and Flying Cloud Drive, a Carver County sheriff’s official said. He was booked midafternoon on four charges, including second-degree drunken driving for refusing an alcohol test. According to the police report, Henderson also had a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia with him.
Henderson, who lives in Eden Prairie about 4 miles from the crash scene, posted $12,000 bail and was released Thursday from the Carver County jail.
The Vikings released a statement that read: “We are continuing to gather information and will have further comment at the appropriate time.”
Henderson was arrested in November in Eden Prairie for possible drunken driving and possession of a controlled substance, according to police.
In Wednesday’s incident, according to Sheriff Jim Olson, deputies received a call shortly before 1 p.m. about an SUV speeding and “driving all over the road.” Moments later, deputies were alerted to a single-vehicle crash at the park and ride.
Deputies determined Henderson was heading west on Flying Cloud Drive, when he skidded over the centerline, through a grassy area, and then through the parking lot before colliding with trees on the west side of the lot. The front of the SUV was heavily damaged.
Henderson, riding alone, appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested after performing poorly during standardized field sobriety testing.
Henderson’s next court appearance is scheduled for March 3.
He has one season remaining on his Vikings contract.
Vikings wide receiver Jerome Simpson avoided jail time after pleading guilty Thursday to careless driving and third-degree DWI.
A third charge, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, was dropped in Hennepin County Court.
Simpson, who will be an unrestricted free agent, was sentenced for the careless driving misdemeanor, and the third-degree DWI (refusal to submit to a chemical test) was stayed.
Simpson was ordered to do 120 hours of community service in public schools instead of serving 15 days in the workhouse. He also must attend alcohol seminars and is on probation for one year.
Simpson was arrested in Minneapolis on Nov. 9 after a state trooper responded to a stalled car blocking lanes on Interstate 394 out of downtown Minneapolis. He served a three-game suspension at the start of 2012 for a felony drug arrest in Sept., 2011.
