NFL notes: League hands out suspensions

Colts linebacker Erik Walden’s head-butt and Buccaneers safety Dashon Goldson’s helmet-to- helmet hit have earned one-game suspensions from the NFL.

NFL vice president of football operations Merton Hanks announced the punishments Monday.

Walden pulled off the helmet of Titans tight end Delanie Walker, then slammed his own helmet into Walker’s head during Indianapolis’ game against Tennessee on Thursday.

It was similar to what Texans defensive end Antonio Smith did in the preseason to Miami guard Richie Incognito, earning Smith a one-game ban in the regular season and for two exhibition games.

Walden was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct but not ejected from the Tennessee game.

Goldson was penalized for unnecessary roughness for his hit on a defenseless receiver, Roddy White, against Atlanta on Sunday.

• Broncos safety Rahim Moore underwent emergency surgery Monday to staunch bleeding in the muscle sheath in his lower left leg, a condition known as lateral compartment syndrome that can cost patients a limb or even their life.

• The Redskins and the NFL are reviewing an incident in which a game official allegedly directed profane words at left tackle Trent Williams. Williams said he was called vulgar names by official No. 81, which would be umpire Roy Ellison, during a Redskins possession late in the second quarter of Sunday’s 24-16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. “You just can’t use that type of language to get your point across,” Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said.

• The Dolphins underwent interrogation by NFL special investigator Ted Wells. The New York attorney began interviewing players regarding the harassment case involving tackle Jonathan Martin and suspended guard Richie Incognito. Wells’ visit was expected to last at least two or three days.

• Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome returned to Baltimore on Monday with a clean bill of health after he remained overnight in Chicago because he became too ill to take the flight home following the Ravens’ game against the Bears.• Former NFL linebacker Thomas Howard died early Monday morning following a high-speed car crash on a freeway in Oakland. Howard, 30, played eight years in the NFL with Oakland, Cincinnati and Atlanta.

• Jack Donaldson, part of the Cincinnati Bengals’ original staff as a defensive line coach and offensive backfield coach, has died. He was 86.
