College days: Trestman played quarterback for the Gophers from 1974-77, backing up Tony Dungy as a freshman. He played in 13 games over three seasons, then transferred to Moorhead State (now Minnesota State Moorhead) for his senior season and started five games.

Pro career: Former Vikings executive Jeff Diamond, a childhood friend of Trestman's, signed him to a free-agent contract in 1978 as a defensive back. Trestman participated in Vikings training camps in 1978 and 1979 but did not make the final roster.

Did you know?

• At Moorhead, Trestman followed Ed Schultz — now a talk-show host on MSNBC — as the Dragons' starting quarterback.

• He has been a member of the Florida bar since 1983.

• He is the third former Gophers athlete currently serving as head coach in a major pro sports league, joining Kevin McHale of the NBA's Houston Rockets and Todd Richards of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets.
