Webb highlights roster decisions

Posted by: Chip Scoggins under Vikings players Updated: August 31, 2013 - 6:57 PM

The Vikings announced their roster cuts and 53-man roster (for now) and the most notable news was that Joe Webb earned a spot at wide receiver.

Webb competed with Stephen Burton for the final wide receiver spot. There was some talk that the Vikings might keep six wide receivers, but they went with five and Webb got the job.

Webb still looks pretty raw and inconsistent at his new position, but everyone knows about his athleticism and the Vikings love his attitude so they want to see if he can grow into this new role.

Here's a few other thoughts on the cuts:

-- Undrafted rookie fullback Zach Line was a long shot at the start of training camp. But Jerome Felton's suspension and Line's strong preseason opened the door for him to make the 53. Line and Rhett Ellison likely will split snaps at fullback until Felton returns.

-- There was some speculation that the Vikings might not keep No. 3 quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson if Webb made the team because he could play quarterback in an emergency situation. However, both made the 53. The sense I got from coaches when I wrote about Bethel-Thompson last week is that they were encouraged by his improvement and want to see how he develops.

-- The Vikings decided to keep eight linebackers, including both draft picks Gerald Hodges and Mike Mauti. They had a lot of guys competing for backup jobs so it was interesting to see how that position played out. I'm interested to see if Desmond Bishop or Marvin Mitchell works with the first team when the Vikings return to practice this week.

-- Marcus Sherels won the punt returner job and fifth cornerback spot over Bobby Felder, who injured his ankle Thursday night. Sherels continues to find ways to make the team. Felder is probably a candidate for the practice squad.

-- The eight-man practice squad will be announced on Sunday. The team could tweak the 53 through the waiver wire as the weekend unfolds.
