Silence observed for tragedy

  • Updated: December 16, 2012 - 7:55 PM

Two players who wear No. 26 (Vikings defensive back Antoine Winfield and Rams running back Daryl Richardson) joined hands with the coaches of St. Louis and Minnesota in tribute to the victims of the school massacre in Newtown, Conn., and New York Giants players wore decals with the initials of Sandy Hook Elementary School.

There were moments of silence before all NFL games Sunday, in tribute to the 26 victims of the massacre Friday at the elementary school in Newtown, Conn. Giants players wore decals with the initials of the school. Flags were at half-staff at M&T Bank Stadium when Baltimore played host to Denver.

"As a parent you drop your kids off at school many times. It's hard to put into words what that community and those families must feel like. We obviously kept them in our prayers," Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said after his team's home game against Jacksonville. Philbin's 21-year-old son, Michael, fell into a Wisconsin river and drowned in January.

• SIDELINED WITH GRIEF: Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent was on the sideline with his teammates Sunday for their game against the Steelers, a week after a fatal accident that killed a practice squad member. Brent, the driver in a one-car accident that killed Jerry Brown, was placed on the reserve/non-football illness list by Dallas this week. Brent gets to remain with the team but not play again this season.

• RARE AIR FOR MEGATRON: Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson became the first player in NFL history with consecutive 1,600-yard receiving seasons and tied an NFL record with his seventh consecutive 100-yard receiving game.

• SHARING WITH BAMBI: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates tied Hall of Famer Lance Alworth's club record with his 81st career touchdown catch, a 9-yarder from Philip Rivers with 14:02 left in a 31-7 loss to the Panthers.
