Vikings receiver Percy Harvin says he's having surgery

Percy Harvin had not Tweeted in more than a month. Yet this afternoon, the Vikings receiver dropped a significant message into the social networking realm.

"Having minor surgery today, keep me in your prayers please!" Harvin wrote.

Details have yet to surface on the nature of the operation. But the natural assumption is that could be in relation to the ligament damage Harvin suffered in his left ankle during the Vikings' Nov. 4 game in Seattle.

That was Harvin's final appearance this season. He missed the Vikings' following game against Detroit, stayed in the Twin Cities during the bye week to rehab, then was unsuccessful in his attempts to return for the team's games in Chicago and Green Bay in Weeks 11 and 12.

On Dec. 5, the Vikings shut down Harvin for the season, placing him on injured reserve.

Harvin has not spoken publicly since Week 11 when he vowed before the Wednesday practice of that week that he would be back on the practice field in attempt to get back into action as soon as possible. But Harvin's return never came with the pain in his ankle lingering and not allowing him to plant and cut smoothly or without discomfort.

Ultimately, the Vikings decided they would stop trying to force the issue on a 2012 Harvin return. And a day after being placed on I.R., the dynamic receiver issued a statement on his season-ending injury.

In it he wrote: "It certainly is disappointing that I was not able to finish out this season with my teammates. As a competitor, I definitely wanted to get back out there on the field, but my injury has just not allowed me to progress to the point where I can help our team. I appreciate the efforts of our medical staff and the support of our fans in helping me through this process and look forward to coming back stronger and better than ever."
