NFL draft: Linebackers

THE CREAM

KEITH RIVERS, USC

As the nation's top high school linebacker in 2003, Keith Rivers had his choice of numbers upon matriculation at Southern California. His choice was easy: 55.

Upon donning that jersey, Rivers joined an elite club that also includes former Trojans stars Willie McGinest, Junior Seau, Chris Claiborne and others.

"It's a big tradition," Rivers said. "Great linebackers have worn it and made it proud. [I] was honored to have it and tried to do my best to live up to it."

After four seasons at USC, it's fair to say Rivers did his part. Much like his predecessors, Rivers developed into a game-changing defensive star with 4.5 speed, projecting as a big-time playmaker in the NFL. He figures to be the first linebacker chosen in the draft and could sneak his way into the top-five selections.

Rivers mostly played on the strong side in the Trojans' NFL-style scheme, but he worked at all three linebacker positions at the Senior Bowl. He said he prefers the strong side, but many NFL teams project him as an ideal weak-side linebacker, because he can use his speed to chase down the play and because his 241-pound frame isn't ideal for taking on blocks from tight ends and tackles.

AND THE CROP

1. JEROD MAYO, TENNESSEE

Considered the top middle linebacker available. His 4.5 speed and 245-pound frame probably makes him best suited for a Cover-2 defense.

2.DAN CONNOR, PENN STATE

The latest in a long line of Nittany Lions middle linebackers. A big hitter who is always productive and even had 11 1/2 sacks in the past two years.

3.ERIN HENDERSON, MARYLAND

Not as thick as his older brother, Vikings linebacker E.J. Henderson, but he is faster. Projects as an outside playmaker.

SLEEPER

RODRICK JOHNSON, OKLAHOMA STATE

A good blitzer who had eight sacks as a junior, his ratings plummeted after a so-so senior season. Could be a steal if he regains form.

PURPLE FEVER

The Vikings' starters are set -- Henderson, Ben Leber and Chad Greenway -- so it is hard to consider this position a top priority. Derrick Pope was signed to replace top backup Dontarrious Thomas, and the Vikings also have veterans Heath Farwell and Vinny Ciurciu as backups. But young linebackers can make up the core of special teams coverage units, so it could never hurt to take a flyer or two on the second day in hopes of finding the next Farwell or Ciurciu.
