Percy Harvin thinks it's 'a longshot' he'll play this week with badly sprained ankle

Percy Harvin may miss his first game in nearly two years Sunday when the Vikings host the Lions. Harvin is dealing with a severely sprained left ankle and came to the team’s locker room on crutches Monday afternoon. Harvin injured his ankle on a run late in the third quarter of Sunday’s loss in Seattle. He fought through the pain and returned to action.

But after the adrenaline wore off, Harvin’s left ankle swelled significantly during the team’s return flight and has left him in major pain.

Here’s what Harvin had to say about the injury this afternoon.

On whether the crutches are a bad sign …

“It’s not a good sign. Like I said, we’re going to go day-to-day and see if we can see what happens.”

On how the ankle feels …

“When I got on the plane, it was pretty painful last night. And this morning, it was pretty much swelling up my whole ankle. So we’ve just got to get the swelling out and then try to go from there.”

On how his right leg is doing, with the soreness in his hamstring …

“It’s fine. It’s all good. I just had a little tightness in my hamstring. I sat out one series. But it was fine. The ankle’s the most important part right now.”

On what’s wrong with his left ankle …

“It’s sprained in three different spots that they told me. So it’s pretty bad. But it’s a good sign that there was nothing fractured or broken. But it’s a bad sprain. So I’ll be in the treatment 24 hours in, seeing if I can bounce back.”

On whether it would make sense to sit out this weekend’s game against Detroit with a Week 11 bye coming …

“Does it make sense? To me, no. But if that’s what has to happen, that’s what has to happen. I’m shooting to try to play. Give it everything I can. But if I can’t, then I’ll have to rest it. But I’m not ruling myself out.”

On whether playing on the ankle Sunday in Seattle aggravated the injury …

“Maybe. It was just me wanting to play. [The training staff] wrapped it up immediately. And I was able to put a little pressure on it. I didn’t have a lot of stability. I could have or couldn’t have [sat out]. But I’m here for this team. I was able to run and jog. So I went back in.”

On what his level of optimism is that he’ll be able to play this weekend …

“I’m just going day by day. Like I said, I’m in a lot of pain. There’s a lot of swelling as of right now. My whole ankle, all the way around is swollen. So we’ve got a lot to work to do. It’s a longshot. But I’m not ruling myself out.”

On whether he feared the ankle was injured even worse …

“I thought I was done. The pain I was feeling at the moment, it kind of let up as I walked off and went to the sideline, which gave me strength to think I could come back in the game. But later on that day, I could put no pressure on it.”

On whether he was surprised that the ankle wasn’t broken …

“I just knew I was in a lot of pain. I didn’t know exactly the magnitude. I knew I was able to put pressure on it so I was hoping there wasn’t nothing broken or fractured. So when I got to the sideline and the pain went down just a little bit, like I said, I thought I could go back in the game. But as the game ended, it wasn’t good.”
