RG3: TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE?

Childhood: Robert Lee Griffin III is the son of career Army spouses. He was born in Okinawa and, after several family moves, graduated from Copperas Cove (Texas) High School, where he was class president and the top high school hurdler in the nation. He participated in the 2008 Olympic trials at the age of 18.

College: Griffin started at Baylor in 2008 and was the Big 12 offensive freshman of the year. He missed most of the 2009 season because of a knee injury, then led Baylor to a 7-6 record as a redshirt sophomore. In 2011, he won the Heisman Trophy as Baylor went 10-3. In the spread offense, he had 37 touchdown passes, only six interceptions and 4,952 yards of total offense.

Sidelines: Griffin was third in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA championships as a freshman before giving up the sport. He was a dean's list student, graduating in three years with a degree in political science.

NFL draft: With his draft stock soaring, the Redskins sent four of their picks (Nos. 1 in 2012, 2013, 2014 and No. 2 in 2012) to the St. Louis Rams to move up to No. 2. After Indianapolis took Stanford QB Andrew Luck, Washington chose Griffin.

Get rich quick: Although Griffin's four-year, $21 million contract pales in comparison to other rookie contracts signed before the most recent collective bargaining agreement, he has lucrative endorsement deals with eight major companies, including adidas, Nissan, Subway and Gatorade.

Grand opening: Griffin led the Redskins to a 40-32 victory in their season opener at New Orleans, throwing for 320 yards and two touchdowns.
