Vikings day at camp: Wednesday

  • Updated: August 9, 2012 - 2:04 AM
Tough day for Ponder

After rebounding in practice the day before, quarterback Christian Ponder and the offense struggled again during a Wednesday practice that featured players wearing shells rather than full pads.

The first possession for the No. 1 offense in the 11-on-11 team portion of practice went like this: sack, Ponder intercepted by linebacker Chad Greenway, Ponder pass broken up by Greenway, incompletion out of bounds by Ponder. That's 0-for-3 with a sack and a turnover.

CAMP PROFILE

Tyrone McKenzie

Position: Linebacker

The skinny: The 6-2, 245-pounder has spent most of the past two seasons on the practice squads of the Patriots, Buccaneers and Vikings. He appeared in the final three games of the 2010 season for Tampa Bay.

Did you know? McKenzie was a third-round draft pick by New England coming out of South Florida in 2009 but suffered a season-ending knee injury in rookie minicamp.

Chances of making the team: Linebacker depth is an issue for the Vikings. Beyond the starting trio of Chad Greenway, Erin Henderson and Jasper Brinkley, there are few guarantees. McKenzie could be in a battle with rookie Audie Cole to be Brinkley's backup. So far in camp, McKenzie has been more impressive. The Vikings also might have an option of sneaking Cole onto their practice squad.

CAMP CHATTER

"Yes. I sleep a whole lot better at night, no question about it."

-- Coach Leslie Frazier on whether he's enjoying a camp that's oddly (especially for the Vikings) devoid of drama and controversy
