Defense shows three-man front

Defensive coordinator Alan Williams did some extended work with a three-man front. Kevin Williams was on the nose and Jared Allen at right end. Brian Robison was primarily at left end, but Alan Williams also experimented with Everson Griffen at left end and Robison standing up as the third linebacker.

A year ago, Griffen was the third linebacker when the team went with a three-man front in limited passing situations.

Williams could be looking for more ways to move Griffen around in the sub packages.

CAMP PROFILE

Larry Dean

Position: Linebacker

The skinny: He's small (6-0, 226) but has a knack for making tackles in the open field. The former Division II Defensive Player of the Year made the team as an undrafted rookie last year.

Did you know? Dean broke former NFL star Jessie Tuggle's record for career tackles at Valdosta State College.

Chances of making the team: Not a lock, but special teams coach Mike Prieffer mentioned Dean, Eric Frampton and Jamarca Sanford as three of the Vikings' best special teams players.

INJURY REPORT

•TE John Carlson (knee), DB Robert Blanton (hamstring) and OT DeMarcus Love (shoulder) are out.

•RB Adrian Peterson (knee) is on the physically-unable-to-perform list.

•CB Josh Robinson (hamstring) practiced for the first time since Day 1.

•OT Pat Brown (Grade 1 MCL sprain) could return Monday.

•RB Jordan Todman (ankle) did not practice.

•S Eric Frampton had the wind knocked out of him and didn't finish practice.

•OL Kevin Murphy (heat-related) did not finish practice. Murphy was taken to a hospital but is OK.

•OL Geoff Schwartz (sports hernia) returned to the Twin Cities for an MRI.

•Defensive end Jeff Charleston (ankle) will have an MRI.

CAMP CHATTER

"I watched some of his film this morning and that guy was a trendsetter. He started an era of just coming across the edge and just absolutely annihilating quarterbacks"

-- Defensive end Jared Allen, when asked about former Vikings defensive end Chris Doleman, who will be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.
