A look at the sights and sounds of Tuesday's action in Mankato:
Rookie kicker Blair Walsh, shown during minicamp in June, nailed a 44-yard field goal to end Tuesday's training camp practice in Mankato.
After a fuss, kick splits the uprights
Tuesday's practice ended with 11-on-11 work, culminating with rookie kicker Blair Walsh attempting a 44-yard field goal on the final snap. To heighten the pressure, the Vikings' defense, spurred on by safety Jamarca Sanford, began shouting wildly to fluster Walsh. Yet when the rookie's kick split the uprights? The defense celebrated like Walsh had just won them a big game. Not a bad moment for the rookie kicker.
Outta my wayEverson Griffen delivered the day's most eye-popping moment during a one-on-one pass rush drill. Matched up against running back Lex Hilliard, Griffen turned on his power and speed and bent Hilliard in half, finishing the sequence with some trash talk. The Vikings are experimenting with Griffen at linebacker, trying to find him an opening to see the field more. Griffen is working with the third unit but continues to show impressive flashes.
Position: Receiver
The skinny: He spent the last nine weeks of 2011 on the Vikings' practice squad. Taylor's dad, Keith, played safety in the NFL for nine seasons with the Colts, Saints and Redskins; his uncle, John, was a three-time Super Bowl champion with San Francisco.
Chances of making the team: Taylor might be a long shot to make the 53-man roster, but could again merit practice squad consideration. He has done some work in camp as a kickoff return guy but is down the depth chart there, too.
• TE John Carlson suffered an MCL sprain and is out indefinitely.
• RB Adrian Peterson (knee) remains on the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list.
• CB Josh Robinson (hamstring) did not practice; day-to-day
• DB Robert Blanton (hamstring) did not practice; day-to-day.
• OL Demarcus Love (shoulder) did not practice; day-to-day.
"I expect to be division champs. I want to be able to fight for the division as we always do every year, and get better for years to come. That's always been our goal. "-- owner Zygi Wilf, on his expectations for this season
