The Chicago Bears and quarterback Kyle Orton agreed Monday on a one-year contract extension that runs through the 2009 season, setting up a competition between him and Rex Grossman.
Orton spent most of last season as the third-stringer behind Grossman and Brian Griese.
Etc.• Veteran cornerback Fernando Bryant was released by the Lions after four seasons with the team. The 5-10, 175-pounder signed with Detroit as an unrestricted free agent in 2004 after five seasons with Jacksonville.
