Williamson's status still undecided

Last update: February 21, 2008 - 10:22 PM

INDIANAPOLIS - The agent for receiver Troy Williamson said Thursday he plans to meet with Vikings officials this weekend at the NFL Scouting Combine. There has been speculation the Vikings might release Williamson.

The seventh overall pick in the 2005 draft, Williamson had career lows in receptions (18) and receiving yards (240) in 11 games this season. Williamson, who has been plagued with dropped passes during his career, failed to hold onto two balls in the regular-season finale at Denver.

Agent David Canter declined to speculate on his upcoming conversation with the Vikings, simply saying, "I will discuss Troy Williamson with them."

Rick Spielman, the Vikings' vice president of player personnel, said the team is "in the talking process," when asked about Williamson's future. "We have no comment on where he's going or what's going to happen to him right now," Spielman said. "There is a lot yet to be determined."

One day after the Vikings released safety Dwight Smith, Spielman left the door open for the team to make more roster moves before free agency starts Feb. 29.

Tough to take

Spielman, appearing on Sirius Satellite Radio, described it as a "kick in the gut" when asked about finding out defensive end Kenechi Udeze had been diagnosed with leukemia.

Asked about Udeze's status later by Twin Cities reporters, Spielman said: "I think coach [Brad Childress] has addressed that and the privacy that KU wants. I just know that all the thoughts and prayers from everybody in the organization are with him. He is a fighter on the field, and he'll take that same approach as he fights this next battle in his life. Just leave it at that."

Moving up or ...

The Vikings are scheduled to pick 17th in the first round of the draft this April, but Spielman did not dismiss the fact the team might try to deal the pick.

"You never know. We made a couple moves last year [in the draft]," he said. "If an opportunity presents itself you weigh that in with what's on your board. If there's a player up there we may go up and get that guy at 13 or 14. If we think that highly of him and he can be that big of difference maker. If we're stuck at 17 we may try to bail out because I think that overall depth of this draft is pretty good."

Etc.

• The Vikings again will host all 30 draft prospects allowed to visit Winter Park on the same day. That will take place in April. Vikings officials spent Thursday evening interviewing players at the combine.

• Spielman on reports the Vikings might be interested in signing quarterback Trent Green, who was recently released by Miami: "I'd rather not say who we are intrigued by and who we are not intrigued by. I'd rather keep that in house."

• Notre Dame tight end John Carlson, who is from Litchfield, spoke with the Vikings on Wednesday. Carlson is attending the combine after missing the Senior Bowl because of what he believes was an intestinal parasite that caused him to lose 17 pounds in eight days.
