Top-to-bottom NFL coach rankings not kind to Leslie Frazier

Posted by: under Vikings, NFC, Super Bowl, Leslie Frazier, Leslie Frazier Updated: May 25, 2012 - 9:16 AM

Everybody loves a good rankings system. Just check out the NFL Network's prime-time programming most nights, with so many top 10 lists that David Letterman is getting jealous.

Sporting News gets it. So now, to generate some conversation, SN has delivered its top-to-bottom rankings of NFL coaches.

Topping the list? Tom Coughlin of the New York Giants. Fresh off winning his second Super Bowl just three-and-a-half month ago, Coughlin deserves the praise. But we should point out that a week before last Christmas, with his Giants sitting at 7-7 and looking like they'd miss the playoffs altogether, there was a strong sentiment that Coughlin should be on the hot seat.

Gotta love this game.

The worst coach in the NFL right now according to the Sporting News rankings: New Orleans' Joe Vitt.

Tough break for Mr. Vitt, who has the interim tag in New Orleans for 2012 as Sean Payton serves a one-year suspension for his role in the Saints' bounty scandal. Making matters worse for Vitt: quarterback Drew Brees is growing increasingly frustrated with his contract negotiations. And, oh yeah, as part of his bounty-related punishment, Vitt will be suspended for the first six games of 2012.

As for where Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier checks in on the list, how does No. 27 sound? Sandwiched right in between Cleveland's Pat Shurmur (4-12 in his first season with the Browns last season) and new Tampa Bay coach Greg Schiano.

The Sporting News comment on Frazier: "If his second year doesn't go better than his first year, there probably won't be a third year."

Joining Coughlin in the top five are New England's Bill Belichick, Green Bay's Mike McCarthy, Pittsburgh's Mike Tomlin and Baltimore's John Harbaugh.

Of the other NFC North coaches, Chicago's Lovie Smith checks in at No. 9 while Detroit's Jim Schwartz sits 17th.

Here's the full list.

And you can vote here in a Star Tribune poll on Frazier's coaching ability.
