Grumpy old Dolphins are pitchmen in denial

Last update: February 1, 2008 - 8:23 PM

PHOENIX - The 1972 Miami Dolphins aren't going down without a fight.

On Friday, Reebok paraded four members of that 17-0 team in front of reporters to promote Reebok's advertising campaign: "Welcome to Perfectville, Pop. 1. Founded in 1972."

It also was kind of sad.

Jim Kiick, a running back on that team, insisted, "We're not a bunch of bitter old men." Then he kind of acted like a bitter old man who's all grumpy because the Patriots might join the '72 Dolphins as the only unbeaten, untied team in NFL history.

"People ask if we could beat the Patriots -- of course not, we're 60 years and older," Kiick joked. "But if we were to play, which rules do we play by? Can you beat on Randy Moss up and down the field, or can you not touch him after 5 yards? Do you put a skirt on Tom Brady, or take it off?"

Kiick was joined by Mercury Morris, Garo Yepremian and Larry Little. Morris gave more animated interviews, claiming the Patriots would have to settle for being the second-best team in history.

How sad. And bitter.
