STAYING OR GOING?

The contracts of 17 Vikings players will expire Tuesday when the NFL's new league year begins and free agency opens. Here's a look at the five most notable players the Vikings must decide whether to keep or send packing.

E.J. HENDERSON

Our guess: Going

• The Vikings are vowing to get younger as they rebuild, which means Henderson won't be part of the plans. He'll turn 32 by the start of next season and was limited throughout 2011 because of chronic knee pain. Furthermore, Jasper Brinkley will be back in 2012 to bolster the linebacking corps. So after nine productive seasons as a Viking, E.J. moves on.

ERIN HENDERSON

Our guess: Staying

• The younger of the Henderson brothers was inconsistent in his first year as a starter at outside linebacker last season but showed significant growth in learning to stay within his role. The Vikings see promise and Henderson made it clear at the end of last season he wants to stay. Now it's all a matter of getting the negotiating done.

VISANTHE SHIANCOE

Our guess: Going

• Kyle Rudolph was drafted last April to be the tight end of the future and will be a bigger part of the plans in 2012. That means Shiancoe's five-season run in the Twin Cities is likely over. He's about to turn 32, had only 36 catches for 409 yards last season and likely will have a price tag much higher than what the Vikings want to spend.

HUSAIN ABDULLAH

Our guess: Staying

• Abdullah, 26, saw his last action of 2011 in Week 10 and was put on injured reserve Nov. 29 because of concussion issues. The Vikings coaching staff loves his intelligence, hustle and low-maintenance personality. But the team must also weigh the danger of re-signing a safety who has had four concussions the past two seasons and could be a medical risk going forward.

DEVIN AROMASHODU

Our guess: Going

• Aromashodu, who turns 28 in May, has averaged 13 catches for 305 yards per season the past three years and won't be a top priority as free agency begins. Despite flashes of potential and a good rapport with quarterback Christian Ponder, Aromashodu will only be brought back at a bargain price if the Vikings can't find receiving help elsewhere.

Other Vikings with expiring contracts: RB Lorenzo Booker, S Tyrell Johnson, DB Benny Sapp, WR Greg Camarillo, LB Xavier Adibi, DT Fred Evans, DT Letroy Guion, SS Jarrad Page, LB Kenny Onatolu, LS Matt Katula and T Scott Kooistra
