Peterson to have surgery Friday

Posted by: Mark Craig under Vikings, Bears, NFC, Leslie Frazier, Adrian Peterson, Anthony Herrera, Leslie Frazier Updated: December 29, 2011 - 4:29 PM

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, who tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee in Saturday's win over the Redskins, will have his surgery on Friday. He'll travel to Birmingham, Ala., to have the operation performed by noted surgeon Dr. James Andrews.

"We talked [Thursday] and [Peterson] is in good spirits," Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said today. "He's anxious to get the surgery done and get started on his rehab. He's looking forward to getting it going."

Frazier said Peterson is scheduled to return to Minnesota on Monday and begin the rehabilitation process. Frazier said it hasn't been determined how much of the rehab will be done in Minnesota and how much will be done in Texas, where Peterson lives in a suburb of Houston.

"You like for guys to be at your facility, with your doctors and your trainers and people here," Frazier said. "But at the same time, if a guy is set up in a situation where we'd feel like the people who are working with him are qualified and doing the same type of protocol that we would have, then you'll work with them on getting that done. But ideally, you'd like them to be at your facility."

As for what Peterson will do, Frazier said, "He'll do a portion of it here and then we're going to talk more about what's the best way to do it. I talked to him yesterday about it, and he wants to do the best thing for him. And I think the best thing would be to do a great deal of it here and we'll talk about if he goes home to visit his family, what would happen with him and how things should be done."

Frazier also was asked again about his job security today. He said, "Nothing has changed."

He said he talks ownership every day, but has not asked about his job security.

"Why would I ask that?" Frazier said with a smile. "Is there a reason why I would question that? No. No. ... Not unless you don't have confidence in what you're doing and where you're going and the people that you're working for.

"I have confidence in my bosses. I've got great bosses and they've been very supportive. Write that. Very supportive. Even in the midst of, what are we now? Three and 12 season? They've been very supportive. Which I am thankful for."

Asked if ownership has brought up his job security, Frazier said, "No. We talk about now. We also talk about the future, and it's not a question."

Asked to be perfectly clear on whether ownership has said he'll be back for sure, Frazier said, "I haven't been told I'm back for sure. It never has been an issue. I'm being completely honest with you. My job security has never been an issue other than when I'm talking to [the media]. That's the truth. We're going to get this thing turned eventually. We'll get it done."

In injury news, Frazier said right guard Anthony Herrera should be OK to play on Sunday against the Bears. Herrera, who missed Wednesday's practice, was limited in Thursday's practice.
