Trying to hang on

Rookie tight end Kyle Rudolph got plenty of work Tuesday with Visanthe Shiancoe (hamstring) out, but that led to some rough moments for the second-round pick. One came during a goal-line drill when a sharp pass from Joe Webb went off Rudolph's chest and dropped to the ground. That drew plenty of moans and groans from Rudolph's teammates and the fans watching. Rudolph said the ball was tipped by a defender. "I wouldn't let the ball just hit me in the chest," Rudolph said. "I'd like to say I'm more coordinated than that."

What fun is this?

Defensive end D'Aundre Reed left the practice field with not only his helmet and pads but also those of veteran end Jared Allen. That's an annual rite of passage in the NFL, and Allen figures that's the least the rookie can do for him. "We can't touch 'em anymore," Allen said of the rookies. "I mean it's like, 'You can't haze 'em. You can't make 'em do this.' That's a bunch of crap, so I guess the least we can do is make 'em carry our pads."

Quarterback update

Tuesday was a rough day for the Vikings quarterbacks, as members of the offense continue to try to absorb a new system in a very short period of time.

Starter Donovan McNabb appeared to have communication issues with Greg Camarillo and threw a pass that was intercepted by linebacker Chad Greenway in seven-on-seven. McNabb rebounded by gunning a nice pass to Jim Kleinsasser but shortly thereafter tried to find Jeff Dugan on a seam route and threw a ball that should have been picked by linebacker Jonathan Gilmore.

Meanwhile, Christian Ponder relied heavily on checkdowns in seven-on-seven, and Webb did not look as sharp Tuesday as he did Monday.

Quote of the day

"He does a great job of catching the football, and we know any time he gets it out there in space, that's when the fun begins. We're going to do a good job not only getting him out of the backfield but at times motioning him out of the backfield where we can set him up in a mismatch."

-- Offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave on getting running back Adrian Peterson more involved in the passing game.

Injury update

• RG Anthony Herrera (knee) is on the physically- unable-to perform list.

• LB Kenny Onatolu (foot) remains sidelined because of a stress fracture.

• TE Visanthe Shiancoe (hamstring) sat out Tuesday after pulling up hurt Monday.

• FS Tyrell Johnson (hamstring) did not practice for the second day in a row.

• DB Simeon Castille (leg) did work off to the side after pulling up lame Saturday.
