MANKATO - Fourth-string quarterback Rhett Bomar spoke to the team Monday and apologized a day after he was arrested in Mankato for alleged third-degree drunken driving.

"It's an unfortunate situation, but we'll take care of it," said Bomar, who refused to give details of the incident. "I've talked to Coach about it. That's between me and him."

Coach Leslie Frazier addressed the situation, saying the team is still gathering information but would handle the situation internally and will not release Bomar because of the incident.

"It's not something that we're pleased about," Frazier said. "He's a guy, like so many, who has to hopefully learn from a mistake and move forward. It's something that's disappointing but hopefully something we'll all learn from as a group."

Frazier was asked what it feels like as an NFL coach to get the call that a player is in trouble.

"This is just something you got to deal with," Frazier said. "This is part of what we do. When you're dealing with young guys, the age group they're in, things are going to happen.

"You got to deal with each situation individually. You try not to lump everybody into the same category. You want to deal with each situation as it comes.

"I'm not naive enough to believe there aren't going to be other situations. I know there's going to be others. You just have to deal with them on an individual basis."

Frazier said it was mostly Bomar's idea to address the team.

"You've got 99 percent of the guys doing the right thing and one guy sticks out like a sore thumb," Frazier said. "So [Bomar was] really embarrassed, and he wanted to talk to the guys about that."

Shiancoe 'tweaks' hamstring

Frazier also had to deal with the first injuries to starters in this minicamp.

Tight end Visanthe Shiancoe injured a hamstring after catching a pass in the two-minute drill. Tyrell Johnson, who's competing with Jamarca Sanford for the starting free safety job, didn't suit up for practice because of a hamstring injury. Receiver Percy Harvin missed the latter portion of practice because he was winded and had sore ribs. Left guard Steve Hutchinson was given some rest because of shoulder soreness and a pectoral injury.

Frazier said he expects Harvin and Shiancoe to be back in short time.

"But [Shiancoe's] hamstring is the one you have to be very careful about," Frazier said.

Greenway welcomes talks

While some players insist on contract negotiations ending once the season starts, linebacker Chad Greenway said he has no problem if his representatives and the Vikings continue discussing a multiyear extension in the coming months.

"I'm not concerned about it, to be honest with you," said Greenway, who is playing on a one-year franchise tender worth more than $10 million.

"I'm just playing, practicing and getting better. [The contract] can never become my focus. At that point, I'd be taking away from my team.

"I have a contract for this year. I'm going to play that contract out until something changes. That can happen without me having to deal with it."

Greenway obviously would have to play some type of role if talks got serious, but he added, "I'm not in the inner talks and negotiations. Let them be, and I'll do my job."

Etc.

• Defensive end Adrian Awasom missed practice after becoming ill Monday morning.

• Cornerback Marcell Gipson missed his third day of practice because of his grandmother's death.
