Vikings day at camp: Tuesday

Jamar's big play

Receiver Jaymar Johnson, who was injured in last year's camp and missed the entire 2010 season, had the catch of the day on a deep ball. A sixth-round pick in 2009, Johnson is turning some heads with his attitude and work in the weight room.

"I really like the way he looks," coach Leslie Frazier said. "He caught the deep ball today in practice. He's always had great speed, but his attitude and his approach is far different than I remember coming into training camp a year ago."

Johnson is getting extra time in practice because three of the top four receivers -- Bernard Berrian, Devin Aromashodu and Michael Jenkins -- can't practice until Thursday per rules of the new collective bargaining agreement. Johnson also is returning punts.

Big, big body

Who knows if he can play at this level, but the most impressive physical specimen at camp might be Jonathan Gilmore, an undrafted rookie from Western Oregon. He stands 6-4, weighs 295 and is built kind of like Brock Lesnar. And, get this, he's a MIDDLE LINEBACKER. And, no, 295 is not a typo.

"He looks like an extra in Braveheart," said one Vikings official.

Harvin still special

Although his value to the current depleted receiving corps never has been greater, Percy Harvin is still working as the No. 1 kickoff returner.

Lorenzo Booker is showing promise while working as the No. 2 kick returner. Defensive back Cord Parks, who was an undrafted rookie last year, is the No. 3 kick returner.

QB update

Joe Webb is ahead of rookie first-round draft pick Christian Ponder. At least for now. As we all know, Ponder will move ahead of Webb in short time. That time could be sooner than later. On the first snap of Tuesday's seven-on-seven drills, Webb threw an ugly pass that was intercepted by Chad Greenway. Webb also was intercepted by safety Jamarca Sanford, although that ball bounced off receiver Andre Holmes' hands.

Quote of the day

"Fire Childress!"

A screaming fan who apparently hasn't heard the news.

Injury report

RG Anthony Herrera (knee) is still on the physically-unable-to-perform list as he recovers from a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

CB Cedric Griffin (knee), who also is coming off ACL surgery, remains limited in practice.
