Vikings: Starting QB is anybody's guess

Tarvaris Jackson hasn't been ruled out, but the team might start Brooks Bollinger to be on the safe side.

Last update: November 7, 2007 - 7:44 PM

The Vikings' weekly ritual of quarterback attrition began Wednesday morning at Winter Park, where team medical officials continued putting Tarvaris Jackson through a series of post-concussion tests in hopes he will recover in time to start Sunday at Green Bay.

Conventional wisdom suggested Brooks Bollinger as the Vikings' likeliest starter; newcomer Koy Detmer would be the backup. Jackson, however, has not been ruled out after passing all five of his mandatory baseline tests and making it through a portion of practice with no side effects.

Still, coach Brad Childress was concerned enough about Jackson's condition -- as well as Kelly Holcomb's ongoing neck injury -- that he created a roster spot for Detmer, who practiced Wednesday with an NFL team for the first time in 10 months.

"We have got one healthy quarterback and two guys with significant head injuries," Childress said. "So you have got two guys [Jackson and Holcomb] who are maybe emergency quarterbacks."

The Vikings are eager to get Jackson back on the field, but Childress said the team's medical staff has "tapped into" several concussion specialists about his condition. Jackson said he wants to play but will be cautious about the timing.

"It's a serious matter," he said. "I'm going to be honest with them and tell them how I feel. If I don't feel good, I'm not going to play."

Childress sometimes informs players of personnel decisions Wednesday morning, but Jackson and Bollinger either don't know who will start or have developed exceedingly good poker faces.

"I'm just showing up here prepared for whatever role I'm going to have," Bollinger said. "To be honest, I'm not exactly sure what it's going to be. A couple guys have been banged up and continue to recover, so I'll just go out there and take whatever reps I can get."
