KANSAS CITY, MO. - There were many head-scratching moments in the Vikings' 13-10 loss to Kansas City on Sunday, but one of the biggest occurred late in the first half.
Leading 10-3, the Vikings took possession at their own 20-yard line with 3 minutes, 32 seconds remaining. On the fourth play of the drive, quarterback Kelly Holcomb threw a 6-yard checkdown pass to Adrian Peterson. The running back did the rest, going 35 yards to the Kansas City 33-yard line.
And then things got weird.
Mewelde Moore gained 3 yards on a run as 41 seconds ticked off the clock (1:15 to 0:34) before Holcomb called a timeout. He then overthrew a wide-open Robert Ferguson in the end zone; the Vikings were taken out of field goal position on the next play as Holcomb was sacked at the Kansas City 40-yard line for a 10-yard loss. On fourth down, he was sacked again and time expired.
Afterward, coach Brad Childress said he did not recall the exact circumstances but added "there's no excuse" for letting that much time come off the clock.
Receiver Bobby Wade said the Vikings never went into the two-minute drill. "It was just the normal plays called," he said. That is why the Vikings did not appear to be operating with any sense of urgency. Wade defended the decision, saying the two-minute offense can result in costly errors.
Said Holcomb: "I don't know what happened. It just wasn't clicking there. I think we got a sack in there at the end. We were trying to throw a Hail Mary, but I just couldn't get it off."
