Winfield won't be back until training camp

After completing the mandatory portion of the Vikings' offseason program, cornerback Antoine Winfield will not rejoin the team until training camp.

"I'm probably going to take my time and probably do my own thing," Winfield said Sunday at the conclusion of minicamp. "I came in, got these three days in, learned what I needed to learn. I know what I need to do on my own to get better. So I'll just work on those things.

"I'm pretty much going to do this thing on my own," he added. "I don't feel like I really need to be around. I pretty much know the defense. I know what I need to work on when I'm away from here."

Winfield has remained in the Twin Cities this offseason but opted against participating in the voluntary conditioning program or Organized Training Activities (OTAs). He has not explicitly detailed his reasons, but hinted Sunday that they relate to the team's prospects for a quick turnaround from last year's 6-10 season.

The Vikings will resume OTAs on Tuesday at Winter Park. They have 10 more days of practice on their offseason schedule, which ends June 19. Winfield will resume working out on his own but reiterated that he will report to training camp when it opens July 25.

"I know what I have to do," he said. "I know how I need to be prepared, and I'm definitely going to do that. I've been working hard on my own."
