The Vikings signed the first of their eight draft picks Friday, agreeing to terms with Coastal Carolina quarterback Tyler Thigpen.

The Minnesota Vikings signed rookie quarterback Tyler Thigpen on Friday.

Thigpen, a seventh-round pick out of Coastal Carolina, impressed coaches with his arm strength and mobility during a rookie minicamp earlier this month and is the first of Minnesota's eight 2007 draft picks to sign a contract.

"It's a great relief to have the contract done and a weight off my shoulders," Thigpen said in a statement issued by the team. "Playing in the NFL some day is something every kid thinks about when they first pick up a football. It's like a dream come true to actually be in the NFL now and I look forward to getting to work and helping this team."

Thigpen is the only quarterback to start a game for Coastal Carolina, which built its football program from scratch in 2003. He had a 30-8 record in four seasons there and was named the Big South Conference player of the year last season after leading the Chanticleers to the I-AA playoffs.

A raw talent who didn't even play quarterback his senior year in high school, Thigpen could compete with veteran Drew Henson for the No. 3 quarterback spot behind Tarvaris Jackson and Brooks Bollinger.
