Five days later, it still is sinking in for Adrian Peterson. He's still getting messages from the likes of Barry Sanders -- and still wondering if he really set the NFL record by rushing for 296 yards Sunday in the Vikings' 35-17 victory over San Diego.
"It's tough not to sit back and say, 'Man, it's kind of crazy,'" Peterson said. "[I'm] not saying that I couldn't imagine doing it. But you think about the guys that had the record -- O.J. Simpson, Jamal Lewis, guys like that -- [and] you sit back and say, 'Man, I can't believe I did it.' But you did. That's when you know that you are truly blessed."
Sanders, the former Detroit running back who entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004, was among the prominent people who have called with congratulations. It was a slow-starting week for Peterson, who said he woke up Monday morning -- after a career-high 30 carries -- and felt "a little beat-up."
The NFL Network came calling Wednesday for a live interview, and Thursday, ESPN personality Kenny Mayne was in town to film a spoof on Peterson's notoriously firm handshake.
Peterson said he is "in the process of getting something together" to give the Vikings offensive line and added: "I'm pretty sure they will want a steak or something to go along with that."It's been a wild week so far," Peterson said. "... I've definitely got to enjoy it, breaking the NFL rushing record for a single game. ... I am enjoying it, but still with all that being said, you have to take care of business and get ready for the upcoming week. It hasn't slowed me down at all as far as that part of it."
