Day@Camp: A daily dispatch from Mankato, Aug. 4

Last update: August 4, 2007 - 11:49 PM

A chilly and chippy display

RIVER FALLS, WIS. — Temperatures were in the 60s and intensity at midseason form. The practice ended almost an hour early, apparently pre-arranged by coaches Brad Childress and Herm Edwards. By coincidence or not, the final play featured a fight between Vikings DE Ray Edwards and Chiefs OL Kyle Turley. Edwards, who landed several punches, earlier had been involved in some shoving after he hit Chiefs QB Brodie Croyle. Childress insisted the play was the last one of the night regardless, saying practice was cut short because the Vikings had only five healthy receivers.

Of the fight, Childress said: "That's just football. It's a physical game. You've just got to make sure that everyone keeps their composure. It'll be a good lesson."

Farwell flashes

During team drills, LB Heath Farwell intercepted Croyle on one play and made a nice inside tackle of Chiefs RB Kolby Smith. Farwell, one of the team's top special teams players, is fighting for a backup linebacker spot.

QUARTERBACK QUANDARY: Snippets from the quarterback transition

Both QBs, Tarvaris Jackson and Brooks Bollinger, turned in more consistent performances than they did Friday night. Jackson put up one of his prettier passes in camp, a tight spiral down the seam to WR Jason Carter, but Carter let it slip from his hands. Bollinger, meanwhile, found WR Martin Nance for a 15-yard touchdown during red-zone drills. "They picked it up from [Friday] night," Childress said.
