Wilf plans relief donation

MANKATO — The Vikings were making plans Friday night to donate all proceeds from their practice against Kansas City to relief efforts dedicated to the Interstate 35W bridge collapse.

"We just felt like we wanted to help the families of the victims," owner Zygi Wilf said, "and those that are touched by this tragedy. The Vikings organization and the Vikings family, we all feel that we should dedicate the proceeds."

The practice attracted more than 7,000 fans, according to the Vikings, and a moment of silence was observed for the accident victims once the full roster for both teams was inside Blakeslee Stadium.

Wilf, meanwhile, set aside a question about the tragedy's potential impact on his $954 million Downtown East stadium proposal. Wilf and the NFL have proposed making a combined $250 million contribution, leaving about $700 million to come from other sources, including the public.

"We should make sure that we take care of the right priorities, and take care of the infrastructure [including the bridge]," Wilf said. "I hope that we can get that done quickly. We have time to deal with stadium issues. That's for another time."

It is possible the Vikings will receive matching donations as well, perhaps from NFL-related charities, so the exact figure of the eventual donation was not known Friday night.

Peterson, Taylor held out

Running backs Adrian Peterson (hip pointer) and Chester Taylor (bruised arm) sat out Friday's practice. Coach Brad Childress is hoping to get Peterson into the mix tonight when the Vikings and Chiefs practice in River Falls, Wis.

“I’d like to see if he can go tomorrow,” Childress said. "He ran out here [before practice] without much trouble. We'll see how he wakes up in the morning. We pushed him pretty good. … He’ll be in for treatment a couple of times tomorrow, and then we’ll just see."

Also sitting out Friday was linebacker Ben Leber (calf) and receiver Troy Williamson, who had an infection that required him to receive antibiotics through an IV. “He’s a possibility for tomorrow,” Childress said.

The Vikings' most serious injury in the practice appeared to be to third-team left guard Dan Mozes, who was taken off the field on a cart after injuring his right knee in team drills.

Receiver Chandler Williams (concussion) and defensive end Khreem Smith (knee) also were banged up. Smith was able to continue.

Sitting out

The Vikings didn't use a few healthy veterans Friday, electing to give little to no work to defensive tackles Kevin Williams and Pat Williams and cornerback Antoine Winfield.

"They took some individual [reps] and they went out and worked on their cardio out on the far field,” Childress said. “That was kind of our plan there. "They don't need a ton of this stuff. They just need to go when we ask them to go."

With both Pat and Kevin Williams sitting, defensive tackles Howard Green and Spencer Johnson got extended time with the first unit. Rookie cornerback Marcus McCauley was the primary replacement for Winfield.

Making an impression

Free-agent rookie linebacker John Kerr was all over the field during the practice, making several hits and intercepting a pass over the middle from Chiefs quarterback Jeff Terrell.
