Greenway shows speed
Weak-side linebacker Chad Greenway, who tore an anterior cruciate ligament in the exhibition opener last season, doesn't appear to have lost a step. Ciatrick Fason found that out during the afternoon practice when Greenway kept up with the running back on a route down the right sideline. Quarterback Drew Henson lofted the ball up for Fason as a defender yelled "ball." Greenway turned around just in time to break up the pass.
Mr. Versatility
With Ben Leber sidelined, Dontarrious Thomas has been working with the first unit at strong-side linebacker. Thomas also is considered the Vikings' top backup at the middle and weak-side spots. "We feel very comfortable if we lost a Sam, a Mike or a Will that he could step in," defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier said. "He is that type of an athlete, and he is smart enough to do it."
Nose for the ball
Marcus McCauley continues to put himself in a position to make interceptions. The rookie cornerback nearly had his fifth pick of training camp in the afternoon practice but had to settle for a pass breakup.

QUARTERBACK QUANDARY
Snippets from the quarterback transition
The Vikings don't play their first preseason game until a week from tonight against St. Louis. However, quarterbacks Tarvaris Jackson and Brooks Bollinger should get some valuable work against an opponent not wearing purple when the Vikings practice against the Kansas City Chiefs for the next couple of days. Jackson figures to get more snaps with the first-team offense but probably won't get all of them. Bollinger has been working more with the first team in recent practice sessions.

CAMP CHATTER
"We will be as vanilla as vanilla can be, I promise you that."
-- Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, making it clear the Vikings don't plan to show much in their practices against the Chiefs tonight and Saturday. The teams will meet in Week 3 in Kansas City.
