Packers 31, Lions 24

Last update: September 24, 2006 - 3:35 PM

DETROIT — Brett Favre joined elite company with the 400th touchdown pass of his career, then added a two more scores to lead the Green Bay Packers to their first win of the season, 31-24 over the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

With his first TD pass of the game — a 75-yarder to rookie Greg Jennings — Favre joined Hall of Famer Dan Marino as the only quarterbacks to reach 400 touchdown passes. Marino has 420.

While the Lions (0-3) remained winless under new coach Rod Marinelli, they had their chances in the fourth quarter.

After Jon Kitna threw behind a wide-open Mike Furrey on a third down, Jason Hanson kicked a 40-yard field goal to cut the lead to seven points. The Lions got the ball back at their 31 with 3:36 to go, but gained just 8 yards before Kitna was sacked on fourth down.

Then, the Packers' Ahman Green fumbled at the 32 with 54 seconds left. The Lions got to midfield and Kitna heaved a pass into a crowded end zone that fell incomplete.

Mike McCarthy earned his first victory as an NFL coach for the Packers (1-2).

Favre connected with Jennings on Green Bay's second drive for a 7-0 lead. He found Donald Driver open in the third quarter for another TD and threw to Green early in the fourth for a 31-21 lead. Favre reached the milestone in his 228th game, one more than Marino needed to throw No. 400.

Favre finished 25-of-36 for 340 yards with three TDs with no interceptions. Jennings caught three passes for 101 yards and a TD.

Kitna was 25-of-40 for 342 yards with two TDs and an interception that was returned for a score. Roy Williams had seven receptions for a career-high 138 yards and a score.

A rookie did most of the work on the milestone TD for Favre, who turns 37 next month. Favre threw a short pass to Jennings and he turned the third-down play into a 75-yarder by eluding Jon McGraw with a spin move and sprinting past Dre' Bly on the sideline.

Detroit made it 7-all on the ensuing possession when Kitna dumped a pass to Shawn Bryson, who easily got past safety Marquand Manuel for a 37-yard score.

Manuel made up for the missed tackle on Detroit's next drive by intercepting a deflected pass and returning it 29 yards for a TD and a 14-7 lead.

Kitna lofted a pass over Williams' shoulder in the end zone on the last play of the first quarter to tie the game again.

A knee-irked reaction - September 24, 2006
A knee-irked reaction - Have we fantasy geeks evolved so dramatically as a species in two years that we can only muster a collective shrug at Maurice Jones-Drew's kneel-down Sunday at the 1-yard-line? In 2007, when Brian Westbrook pulled the same trick, the fantasy football community nearly melted the Internet's tubing with sob stories and "How could he do that to us?" rants. But after Sunday, when MJD helped the Jaguars control the clock in the final minute and get the victory by taking a knee a foot in front of the goal line, there were millions of geek heads nodding in approval. "Yeah, good idea. Smart move. It's OK if it cost me six fantasy points." Have we fantasy freaks lost our freakiness? Have the geeks gone mild? More
