There is plenty of talk about whether the Vikings will take a quarterback early in the draft. Here are eight players to keep an eye on as the NFL scouting combine takes place this week (projections by NFLDraftScout.com):

Blaine Gabbert, Missouri (6-5, 235, junior): Excellent arm strength but needs to improve his work from the pocket. Projection: first round.

Cam Newton, Auburn (6-6, 250, junior): Some teams are sure to fall in love with the Heisman winner, but there could be questions about his mechanics and character. Projection: first round.

Jake Locker, Washington (6-2, 228): Stock tumbled after he stayed at Washington for his senior season, but more than one coach will see the potential to mold Locker into an NFL quarterback. Projection: first or second round.

Christian Ponder, Florida State (6-2, 222): Has the ability to run a pro-style offense, but there are definite questions about his arm strength and his troubles with injuries. Projection: second round.

Ryan Mallett, Arkansas (6-6, 238, junior): Concerns include his accuracy and decision-making ability, but he does have a big-time arm. Pro scouts will like that he took snaps from under center in college. Character concerns also could be a factor. Projection: second or third round.

Colin Kaepernick, Nevada (6-5, 225): Stock shot up at the Senior Bowl in January. Has made improvements as a passer but still has plenty to learn. Throwing mechanics need work. Projection: second or third round.

Andy Dalton, Texas Christian (6-2, 213): Had a tough time in the Senior Bowl but has better-than-average arm strength, makes good decisions and has good footwork. Projection: third round.

Ricky Stanzi, Iowa (6-4, 221): Had a very good senior season with the Hawkeyes. Possesses a strong arm but his on-the-field decisions sometimes were questioned at Iowa. Projection: third or fourth round.
