La Velle E. Neal III and Phil Miller report on the Twins from wherever they make news

Sano, Buxton both out of lineup again as Twins try to salvage L.A. finale

LOS ANGELES — Byron Buxton took batting practice on Wednesday, and that was progress. Miguel Sano took batting practice on Wednesday, too, and that was a setback.

Neither player is in the Twins’ lineup tonight, and they’re just hoping their absence is a short one.

Buxton said he feels much better after two pretty miserable days of battling migraine headaches, which cause his vision to blur and sometimes makes him see double — not ideal for a ballplayer. The migraine isn’t completely gone, so the Twins aren’t ready to activate him from the 10-day disabled list, but he is hopeful that an offf day tomorrow will have him ready to play again on Friday.

It’s the the point now, manager Paul Molitor said, where the Twins have to consider a few games of rehab in order to make sure he’s ready to play. But the Twins haven’t made that determination yet.

Meanwhile, Molitor was in the batting cage this afternoon when Sano stepped in and started swinging at pitches.’You could tell it wasn’t comfortable for him yet,” Molitor said of his third baseman, who was hit on the hand by a Josh Fields pitch on Monday. “We feel it’s more of some type of bone bruise than ligament or bone damage. But the vibration of the swing is making it tough for him right now.”

Sano, too, believes a day off Thursday will be enough time for him to heal, and so far, no disabled list stint is contemplated.

With those two out, the Twins will try to snap their three-game losing streak and salvage the final game of this series against the Dodgers. It helps that Ervin Santana is on the mound, since he has a 5-4 record and 3.24 ERA in nine career starts against Los Angeles.

Sano scratched; Granite starts in center for Twins as Buxton fights migraines

UPDATE: Miguel Sano, hit on the left wrist last night by a Josh Fields pitch, was scratched from the Twins’ lineup after batting practice on Tuesday. His absence means Eduardo Escobar will move over to third base and move up to Sano’s cleanup spot, with Jorge Polanco entering the lineup at shortstop. No word yet on the severity of Sano’s injury.

LOS ANGELES — Zack Granite remains in the major leagues, and in fact will bat second in the Twins’ lineup tonight. That wasn’t the plan, since Byron Buxton is eligible to come off the disabled list today, his strained groin now healed.

But Buxton was stricken with migraine headaches on Monday, a condition so painful and debilitating, he was sent back to the team hotel before Monday’s game began. The center fielder’s condition was serious enough that manager Paul Molitor and the Twins’ front office decided to wait another day or two until the 23-year-old outfielder has had a chance to work out on the field a couple of times.

“I think he’s feeling a little bit better today,” Molitor said. “I’m interested to see how much he gets done in terms of practice. But being on the DL, there’s just not an urgency to force that today. We’ll see how he feels tomorrow.”

In the meantime, Granite, 8-for-17 (.471) in his last five games, will remain on the roster and in center field. Molitor has made it clear that he would like to find a way to keep Granite on the roster, but it doesn’t seem likely as long as the Twins carry 13 pitchers.

Jaime Garcia arrived today and threw a short bullpen session as he awaits his first start as a Twin, scheduled for Friday in Oakland.
