Twins show Royals no mercy

Posted by: Suzanne Solheim Updated: July 27, 2010 - 11:39 AM

The Twins absolutely punished the Kansas City Royals Monday night after knocking out 20 hits for a 19-1 victory.  Keeping their momentum, they've scored 36 runs during this three-game winning streak, reaching double digits for the second straight day.

Reigning American League Cy Young award winner Zack Greinke was tagged for eight runs on eight hits and lasted just four innings. Danny Valencia polished off the six-run first with a grand slam -- his first big league homer -- before going 4-for-4 with four runs scored.  Awesome.  Joe Mauer also had a great night at the plate, going 5-for-5 with seven runs driven in.  Delmon Young continued to knock the ball around with three hits and Alexi Casilla did his part as well with three RBI.

Francisco Liriano showed shades of April during a solid outing, surrendering just three hits with six strikeouts and no walks.  This win, combined with the Detroit Tigers being no-hit by former Twin Matt Garza, moves Minnesota within a game of the Chicago White Sox and two games ahead of the Motor City Kitties.

With Carl Pavano coming off two consecutive complete games, hopes are high for another pounding, this time against struggling lefty Bruce Chen at 7:10pm tonight.

What are you guys up to Thursday?  I highly recommend checking out the first annual Twins & Pins Charity Bowling Classic in Brooklyn Park, hosted by Orlando Hudson and Denard Span, among others.  If you can't make it, I'll certainly do my best to take lots of pictures of Joe Mauer in his bowling shoes.
