La Velle E. Neal III has covered baseball for the Star Tribune since 1998 (the post-Knoblauch era). Born and raised in Chicago, he grew up following the White Sox and hating the Cubs. He attended both the University of Illinois and Illinois-Chicago and began his baseball writing career at the Kansas City Star. He can be heard occasionally on KFAN radio, lending his great baseball mind to Paul Allen and other hosts. Mark Rosen borrows him occasionally for WCCO-TV.
No early clubhouse access today as Bobby Bonilla and the player's association make their annual presentation.
But the lineups are here....
Update: Glen Perkins threw lightly in the bullpen today as he recovers from a lower back strain. He'll see how he feels tomorrow and might pitch in a minor league game on Monday.
Righthander Scott Baker said he threw 78 pitches on Friday and will shoot for 85-90 in his final spring start next week. Most importantly, he feel like he's taken the slurve out of his curve and now has a bonafide slider.
Extra players today include 5-foot-3 infielder Chris Cates and former second-round pick Joe Benson, an outfielder.
Update: Heard that Anthony Slama has been told he will start the season at Class AAA Rochester but will travel north with the team for the exhibition games agaiinst St. Louis.
Also heard that catcher Danny Lehman has been cut. Might be a couple more cuts after the game....
