Righthander Pat Light, with the 100-mph fastball, has been called up and will be available today.

Light came to the Twins from the Red Sox in exchange for lefthander Fernando Abad on Aug. 1. He immediately rang up 100 a few times on the radar gun after reporting to Rochester. He also throws a good split-fingered fastball.

His potential is interesting, because of the velocity. But one serious baseball man, whose opinions about baseball I take seriously, told me after the deal was made that Light might be best suited for middle relief or just a little later than that. So we will see.

Light was 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA for Rochester in six appearances following the trade. Once he appears in a game, he will be the 27th pitcher used by the Twins this season, adding to their club record.

The move comes after the Twins got what they wanted from Adalberto Mejia on Saturday. He was called up as an emergency arm and was needed when Hector Santiago was needed.

Not sure if you read it, but check out my postgame blog last night about the Twins trying to change Santiago's delivery to cut down on his huge walk rate. Interesting.

The Twins will try to avoid getting swept in four game here. They have Ervin Santana going today, so they have a chance. But the Royals have Danny Duffy going, and he has been outstanding lately.

Just talked to Bert Blyleven. He pitched for the Twins the last time they were swept in four games here - back on Aug. 6 1975. Steve Busby went nine innings, Bert went eight. And the Twins lost 4-3.
