Today already has been a busy day, with Brian Dozier signing a four-year, $20 million contract that buys out all of his arbitration years. It's a good deal for both sides because the Twins lock up a second baseman who can hit 20 homers, steal 20 bases and play solid defense for an average annual salary of $5 million year. Dozier will make $9 million in 2018, the final year of the contract, and you can argue that his production in 2014 was worth that much.

But most of these deals get an option year tacked on, or the first free agent year is bought out. The Twins were unable to do that, and Dozier gets to hi the market at age 31, when he can still cash in on another contract.

The future didn't affect the Twins decision making here. They have Jorge Polanco at Class AA New Britain, who is a hitting prospect, but assistant GM Rob Antony said you can't worry about the future. Besides, Polanco is going to play shortstop and could make the majors at that position.

Earlier this morning, the Twins optioned righthander A.J. Achter to Class AAA Rochester and reassigned Tyler Grimes, James Beresford, Danny Ortiz, Jose Martinez and Eric Farris to the minor league camp.

And it it wasn't enough this morning, the Twins have announced plans for Opening Day on Apr. 13 against Kansas City.
