'Tis the season to rank baseball prospects, and the Twins are getting good reviews for their farm system. ESPN's Keith Law, who is skilled at ranking prospects as well as fine restaurants, ranked the Twins farm system as second best in the game, trailing only the Cubs. If not for Cubs majordomo Theo Epstein overhauling his system and cornering the market on infield prospects, the Twins would likely had topped the rankings. A day later, Law released his top 100 prospects list (subscriber only) which had six Twins prospects on it. 2. Byron Buxton, OF - down from 1 last year 15. Miguel Sano, 3B - No. 8 last year 30. Alex Meyer, RHP - Up from 62. 43. Nick Gordon, SS - drafted in June 53. Kohl Stewart, RHP - up from 76. 97. Jose Berrios, RHP - unranked last season. I don't have many problems with where the Twins prospects landed. Hard to keep Buxton and Sano where they were ranked last year because of the injuries. In Buxton's case, it's hard to hold back Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant, who went Old Testament on minor league pitching last season and has taken over the top spot. I would quibble that Berrios should have been on the list last season and should be higher this year. He has a good curveball and can change speeds off his 94-97 mph heater. To me he's a good starting pitcher candidate, but Law worries that Berrios won't stick as a starter because he's about 6 feet tall and doesn't have a lot of tilt or life on his fastball. On Friday, MLB.com will release it's top 100 prospects, with the top 50 being highlighted during a one-hour show at 8 pm on the MLB Network. Buxton already has been listed as the top outfield prospect, Sano the third best third base prospect, Gordon the sixth best shortstop prospect and Meyer the 10th best righthander.
