La Velle E. Neal III has covered baseball for the Star Tribune since 1998 (the post-Knoblauch era). Born and raised in Chicago, he grew up following the White Sox and hating the Cubs. He attended both the University of Illinois and Illinois-Chicago and began his baseball writing career at the Kansas City Star. He can be heard occasionally on KFAN radio, lending his great baseball mind to Paul Allen and other hosts. Mark Rosen borrows him occasionally for WCCO-TV.

Phil Miller covered three seasons of Twins baseball, but that was at a different ballpark for a different newspaper. Now Miller returns to the baseball beat after joining the Star Tribune as the Gopher football writer in 2010, and he won't miss the dingy dome for a minute. In addition to the Twins and Gophers, Miller covered the Utah Jazz and the NBA for six years at The Salt Lake Tribune.

Twins camp Day 4: Kubel arrives. Ryan update. Pelfrey update. Golf

Deibinson Romero, Jorge Polanco, Eduardo Escobar and Danny Santana reported today. So did Jason Kubel.

Kubel has one of the coveted corner stalls in the clubhouse, and spent part of the morning holding court with Glen Perkins and Matt Guerrier with Josh Willingham not far away.

Looking at the roster, I'm pretty sure that everyone is here, one day before position players are expected to report and two days before the first full squad workout.

The Twins announced this morning that GM Terry Ryan went to the Mayo Clinic yesterday for his one-week checkup following cancer surgery last week, and everything is healing nicely. He's back at home continuing his recovery.

Twins officials have talked about how strange it is for Ryan's office to be empty at this time of year. I miss going in there because he has a HUGE chart of every team's camp roster that takes up an entire wall. We would look at the names and chat about different players.

Mike Pelfrey is back in camp after having an ear infection treated on Wednesday.

Today will be a short day. The team will hold its annual charity golf tournament to raise funds for cancer care in the area.
