Phil Miller covered three seasons of Twins baseball, but that was at a different ballpark for a different newspaper. Now Miller returns to the baseball beat after joining the Star Tribune as the Gopher football writer in 2010, and he won't miss the dingy dome for a minute. In addition to the Twins and Gophers, Miller covered the Utah Jazz and the NBA for six years at The Salt Lake Tribune.

The Twins announced today that they are activating third baseman Trevor Plouffe from the 15-day disabled list and optioning infielder Tsuyoshi Nishioka back to Class AAA Rochester.

Plouffe has been out since July 20 with a bruised right thumb. He went 0-for-8 on a rehab assignment for Class AAA Rochester.

Nishioka went 0-for-12 and made three errors of the Twins in last week’s three-game series at Cleveland and remained on the bench for this weekend, as the Twins were swept by Tampa Bay.

Nishioka, 28, has batted .245 with Rochester this season and will have a chance to settle in again there, with the International League’s regular season set to end on Sept. 3.
